You will not want to miss our upcoming meeting on June 24, starting at 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 900 Wolcott Avenue. We thank the Elks for hosting us.
Trustee and Past President Diane Lapis and Dr. Steven Payne, Director of the Bronx County Historical Society, have prepared a fascinating program on the resort Camp Nitgedaiget and the Coops (a related housing development in the Bronx) for Jewish progressives and Communist sympathizers. Camp Nitgedaiget (pronounced “Nish-guh-die-get” and meaning “no worries” in Yiddish), operated from 1922 until the early 1950s and was located in the hamlet of Dutchess Junction, about two miles south of Beacon on Route 9D. Starting modestly with only tents, the camp quickly grew to accommodate up to 1,000 patrons daily through features such as its hotel.
The meeting will complement our next exhibit, to be focused on Camp Nitgedaiget and the Coops, opening on July 26 at our headquarters, 61 Leonard Street.
Historic Property Plaques
Want to celebrate the history of your home or business? Every structure within the Beacon City School District is eligible to purchase one of our new Historic Property Plaques, providing the building is 100 years or older. The oval plaques are 6x8 inches and come in:
Aluminum ($250+$20.94 sales tax = $270.94); or
Bronze ($395+$33.08 sales tax = $428.08).
If you are a tax-exempt non-profit, please provide your EIN/Tax ID number. The property owner is responsible for installing the plaque (with provided hardware). Delivery takes about eight weeks once the order is placed.
Participants need to submit a simple, easy-to-complete, one-page application form and provide information regarding the history of the building, including photos if available, with their check. Email BeaconHistorical@gmail.com for more information and a copy of the application form.
Can’t make it in person to our meetings? No problem!
