The Boats of Summer: Steamboats on the Hudson

  • Beacon Elks Lodge 900 Wolcott Avenue Beacon, NY, 12508 United States (map)

All Aboard for our May Meeting: Join us May 27 at 7 p.m. for a talk by Andrew Donovan on “The Boats of Summer - Remembering The Steamboats of the Hudson.”  We gather at the Beacon Elks Lodge, 900 Wolcott Avenue, and all are welcome.

Mr. Donovan has a great interest in the history of Hudson River steamboats, in part because he worked as the Assistant Purser aboard the Steamer Alexander Hamilton (shown), the last sidewheel steamer to sail on the Hudson, during its final season on the river in 1971. Donovan earned both his bachelor’s degree and his Ph.D. from Fordham University.  In 1978 he joined Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, Inc., from which he took leave to be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy. During his four and half years of active duty, he served aboard the ammunition ship USS Suribachi and the guided missile cruiser USS Josephus Daniels. After his discharge from active duty in 1984, he remained in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 2000 with the rank of lieutenant commander.

Thank you to the Elks for again hosting us!
